Cosmetic Fillings

Uses of Cosmetic Fillings:

  • To fill cavities caused by tooth decay
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To replace old, unsightly metal fillings
  • To reshape or restore misshapen or worn teeth

Materials Used:

  • Composite resin: A blend of plastic and fine glass particles, which can be color-matched to the shade of your tooth.
  • Porcelain: Used for inlays or onlays, which are custom-made in a lab and bonded to the tooth.

The Cosmetic Filling Process:

  1. Preparation:
    • The dentist removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth, and if necessary, shapes the tooth to prepare for the filling.
  2. Etching and Bonding:
    • The surface of the tooth is etched and treated with a bonding agent to ensure the filling adheres well.
  3. Application of Filling Material:
    • The composite resin is applied in layers and hardened with a special curing light. Each layer is shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth.
  4. Polishing:
    • Once the filling is in place, the dentist shapes and polishes it to blend seamlessly with the rest of the tooth, creating a smooth, natural appearance.

Advantages of Cosmetic Fillings:

  • Natural appearance: Blends in with the color of the surrounding teeth, making them nearly invisible.
  • Less invasive: Requires less removal of the tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings.
  • Strong and durable: Modern composite fillings can last several years with proper care.
  • Bonding strength: The material bonds directly to the tooth, providing extra strength to the restored area.

Disadvantages:

  • Not as long-lasting as amalgam: Cosmetic fillings may wear down or become discolored over time and might need to be replaced more often than metal fillings.
  • Slightly more expensive than amalgam fillings
  • Sensitivity: Some people may experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold after the procedure.
