What is Cosmetic Fillings?
Tooth fillings, also known as white filling or composite filling, are used to repair cavities,, cracks and minor chip on the tooth that is closely shade match with natural teeth. Cosmetic fillings are created from composite resin or porcelain materials that match surrounding teeth rather than traditional amalgam (silver) for a more natural-looking form.
Uses of Cosmetic Fillings:
- To fill cavities caused by tooth decay
- To repair chipped or cracked teeth
- To replace old, unsightly metal fillings
- To reshape or restore misshapen or worn teeth
Materials Used:
- Composite resin: A blend of plastic and fine glass particles, which can be color-matched to the shade of your tooth.
- Porcelain: Used for inlays or onlays, which are custom-made in a lab and bonded to the tooth.
The Cosmetic Filling Process:
- Preparation:
- The dentist removes the decayed or damaged part of the tooth, and if necessary, shapes the tooth to prepare for the filling.
- Etching and Bonding:
- The surface of the tooth is etched and treated with a bonding agent to ensure the filling adheres well.
- Application of Filling Material:
- The composite resin is applied in layers and hardened with a special curing light. Each layer is shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth.
- Polishing:
- Once the filling is in place, the dentist shapes and polishes it to blend seamlessly with the rest of the tooth, creating a smooth, natural appearance.
Advantages of Cosmetic Fillings:
- Natural appearance: Blends in with the color of the surrounding teeth, making them nearly invisible.
- Less invasive: Requires less removal of the tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings.

Disadvantages:
